March is National Reading Month. Leslie Bell Elementary celebrated Read Across America Week March 4th - 8th. Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA), this program focuses on motivating children to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources. It is the nation's largest celebration of reading. Overall, Read Across America is an important event that helps to promote literacy, encourage a love of reading, and build community among children and families.
The LBS celebration of reading was planned in partnership with staff and student council. During the week, each day had a theme that included related dressing up, activities, and giveaways. Themes were as follows:
Monday-- Book Character Day
Tuesday-- Super Hero Day
Wednesday-- Silly Day
Thursday-- Hat Day
Friday-- Pajama Day
The week also included DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time daily. Locations, assigned by grade-level and rotated each day, included the: cafeteria, library, outdoor classroom, stairway by the elevator, and playground. Kudos to our LBS staff for promoting and being a role model for reading and encouraging a love of reading in our students.
